An Emperor who cares for nothing but his appearance hires two tailors who promise him the finest suit of clothes from a fabric invisible to anyone unfit for his position or “just hopelessly stupid”. The Emperor cannot see the fabric, but pretends to be able to see it, as do his ministers who too are afraid of appearing unfit for their position. When the frauds say that the suit is finished, they mime dressing the Emperor who then marches in procession before his people, who also pretends the Emperor is dressed in lovely clothes. Suddenly, a child in the crowd shouts that the emperor is naked and the crowd laughs. The Emperor still pretends to wear the beautiful clothes, as he does not want to loose face.
