A romance between a shepherdess and a porcelain chimneysweep is threatened by a carved mahogany satyr who wants the shepherdess as his wife. Therefore the two lovers descend from the table to disappear into the wide world. After great difficulties they escape through the chimney pipe where they end up on the chimney of the house. The shepherdess is so thrown back by the size of the world, that she asks her lover to take her back to the table. Back in the house, the Chinaman (her grandfather) can no longer nod his head to agree to the satyr, so the shepherdess and the chimneysweep can be together forever.
